The internet is amazing. Yesterday, while Googling myself, I discovered a place called Bensenville, Illinois where they are trying to decide on a book for their community read. FUNNY IN FARSI is one of them. I wonder how they heard about my book. Maybe they were browsing the Sociology section at their local Border’s. (I’m not making this up. It’s in Sociology, per order of corporate offices. I can just hear the conversation…”where do we put a humorous Middle Easterner? Sociology of course!”) In any case, thank you Bensenville! I am honored to be in the running.

Dear Kevin,
This is the first time anyone has compared me to William Shakespeare, but I’ll take it!
There are so many great books out there! Believe me, they are not all boring. Have you ever read a graphic novel? I bet you would like those. Try PERSEPOLIS or MAUS. If you like humor, you should try James Thurber, Dave Barry or David Sedaris.
But whatever you do, don’t give up! You can also ask your teacher for suggestions. Have you read WHERE THE RED FERN GROWS or ISLAND OF THE BLUE DOLPHINS? They’re sad but sooooo good.
Will you email me and let me know what book you are reading next? I’ll be waiting.
Best,
Firoozeh

Dear Firoozeh,
I just wanted to let you know that Illinois isn’t the only place your book is being read. We just read your book, Funny in Farsi, in Okinawa, Japan for our book club this month. We are a group of military wives and we loved it. Thank you for your humor. Keep writing!
